Collaborating Artist: David A. Gordon, Tenor
David A. Gordon is originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan. After spending three
years in the theatre department of the University of Michigan and three years
in New York City working as a freelance lighting designer, stage manager and
director, David returned to Ann Arbor and earned his Bachelor of Music degree
from the University of Michigan School of Music, studying under world-renowned
tenor George Shirley. He then received his Master of Music degree from the
Manhattan School of Music, in the studio of the late Ted Puffer. He is
currently studying with Mark Oswald. David's upcoming engagements include
Rodolfo in La Bohéme, Don Basilio in Le Nozze di Figaro and Hoffman in
The Tales of Hoffman. Recent performances include: Mozart's Requiem,
Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, Elder Hayes in Susannah,
Dr. McPhail in Rain by Richard Owen (available on Albany Records),
Mur in Marina by Deborah Drattell. Other roles performed include Don Jose
in Carmen, the Male Chorus in The Rape of Lucretia, Alfredo in La Traviata,
the Governor in Candide, Elder Gleaton in Susannah, Ferrando in Cosí fan tutte,
Monostatos in The Magic Flute, and Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings.
In addition to opera performance, David is on the faculty of the Manhattan School
of Music Preparatory Division, where he teaches voice and acting. He is a
producing partner and actor for Boiling Water Productions' current project,
Kalamazoo, River: US, a musical comedy about river pollution. He is also
working with Ann Arbor born songwriter Erin Kamler on the development of her
stage musical Runway 69, and with Laura Ward and Octavia Cup on a new dance
theatre project.
David has directed productions of The Rape of Lucretia, Dido and Aeneas,
The Cassandra Project, Wallace and Women, and Lysistrata, all at the
University of Michigan. He has directed scenes for the University of Michigan,
the Chautauqua Institute, the Brevard Music Center and the MSM Preparatory
Division and Summer Program.
